Modulated EVP

Modulated EVP is a new experimental concept coined by the GhostTube team offering a brand new experiment to try out on your paranormal investigations. It involves combining audio from a recording device, with sound modulated from external interference such as magnetic or electro-magnetic fields. In this article we explain the underlying theories and inspirations for Modulated EVP, and how GhostTube EVP works to help you conduct this new paranormal experiment.

What is an EVP?

Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) refers to the capture of disembodied voices or sounds on electronic recording devices, such as audio recorders or radios, that are not attributable to any known external source during the recording process. Often associated with paranormal investigations and the study of alleged hauntings, some believe these anomalous sounds represent the voices or communications of spirits, ghosts, or other non-corporeal entities. The phenomenon is characterized by short, often indistinct utterances or phrases that are typically only audible upon playback and are not perceived by the human ear at the time of recording. While skeptics often attribute EVP to radio interference, ambient noise, or psychological phenomena like pareidolia (finding patterns in random stimuli), believers maintain that these unexplained recordings offer evidence of communication from beyond the physical realm.

What is Modulated EVP?

Modulation involves the synthesizing of audible sounds using the raw interference from an environmental sensor as input. GhostTube EVP provides a new experiment, which we've dubbed "Modulated EVP", which uses the magnetometer sensor in your device to measure fluctuations in magnetic fields, and using this interference as input, modulates noise and static. The modulated sounds are combined with the raw audio captured from the microphone resulting in noise and static in your recordings which you can actually hear in playback.

This experiment was inspired by traditional methods of conducting EVP sessions that relied on using old analogue recording equipment, namely, recorders that relied on writing data to magnetic tape. Prior to the introduction of electronic voice recorders, the main theories underlying EVPs proposed that spirits influence our environment in the form of electro-magnetic energy, and if true, could influence sounds recorded onto the magnetic tape. Like most popular experiments used in the field, the concept of Modulated EVP (and even regular EVP) still remain theoretical and unproven, but until now, there hasn't been a reliable tool to explore them.

Phonetic Modulation

Phonetic modulation, another type of experiment coined by the GhostTube team, combines the underlying theory behind Modulated EVP with a codebook of symbols that represent common speech patterns and phonemes. These phonemes can be triggered when specific magnetic signatures are detected by the magnetometer in your device.

It is important to note that unlike other tools and experiments, GhostTube EVP does not rely on snippets of radio, it comes with no pre-recorded sounds, and does not rely on any word dictionary - the phonetic sounds that are produced when using this feature are synthesized in realtime and only from a finite list of speech patterns in our proprietary codebook.
